Bersempena
sambutan Hari Bumi pada bulan April 2014, Institut Rimbawan Malaysia (IRIM)
dengan kerjasama Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Kedah telah menganjurkan program
penanaman bakau pada 27 April 2014. Sebanyak 20,200 anak bakau telah ditanam di
Pulau Dayang Bunting, Langkawi sekaligus memecahkan Malaysia Books of Records (MBOR). Rekod
terdahulu adalah sebanyak 11,111 anak bakau yang dicatatkan pada tahun 2011 di
Perlis.
Anak
bakau yang ditanam adalah daripada spesies bakau minyak (Rhizpora apiculata) dan bakau kurap (Rhizopora mucronata)yang merupakan spesies bakau yang paling banyak ditemui di Malaysia.

Program
ini telah dijayakan oleh hampir 2,000 sukarelawan daripada SSYEAP, iM4U,
Persatuan Pencinta Alam Malaysia, Friends of Langkawi Geopark (FLAG) dan agensi
kerajaan seperti Jabatan Perhutana Semenanjung Malaysia (JPSM), Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Kedah dan PULAPOL Langkawi bersama Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Langkawi, Lembaga Pembangunan Langkawi (LADA), Agensi Penguatkuasa Maritim Malaysia (APMM),Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Langkawi, Majlis Perbandaran Langkawi, Jabatan Kerja Raya Langkawi, Rakan Alam Sekitar dengan disokong oleh Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Alam Sekitar.
Program ini dirasmikan oleh bekas Perdana Menteri, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Program ini turut dihadiri oleh Timbalan Menteri Sumber Asli dan Alam Sekitar; Datuk Seri Dr James Dawos Mamit; Timbalan Ketua Pengarah Jabatan Perhutanan Semenanjung Malaysia, Dato' Nik Mohd Shad Nik Mustafa dan Presiden SSYEAP, Encik Suhairi Karim.

Program
ini merupakan platform bagi meningkatkan kesedaran mengenai hutan bakau
sukarelawan dan memberi pendedahan kepada komuniti tentang kepentingan hutan
bakau untuk kelestarian ekosistem sungai dan sebagai sumber makanan laut .
Biggest Mangrove Seedling Replanting Event
In
conjunction with Earth Day celebration in April, Institute of Foresters
Malaysia (IRIM) and Kedah State Forestry Department had organized biggest
mangrove seedlings planting with total of 20,200 seedling and broke
the existing record made in 2011 with 11,111 mangrove seedling in
Perlis. The number choose is related to the Vision 2020, idea launched by Tun
Dr Mahathir Mohamed in 1991.
The
mangrove species are Rhizopora apiculata and Rhizopora mucronata the most
abundant mangrove species that could be found almost everywhere in mangrove
forest through out Malaysia.
Almost
2,000 volunteer had joined in this event from various association and agencies
such as SSYEAP, iM4U, Malaysian Nature Society, Friends of Langkawi
Geopark, Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department, trainee of Langkawi Police
Academy, student from Langkawi's school, LADA, JKR uniform agencies of Malaysia
Navy, Maritime Enforcement Agency, Langkawi Council, Langkawi District Office
and supported by Natural Resources and Environment Ministry. Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is the honoured guest of the day along with Datuk Seri Dr James Dawos Mamit, of Natural Resources and Environment Minsitry, Dato' Nik Mohd Shah Nik Mustafa of Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department and Encik Suhairi Karim of SSYEAP.
This program has acted as a platform to disseminate the importance of mangrove ecosystem to the volunteers and local of Langkawi as nursery ground for fishes and crustaceans.
